DELF / DALF


DELF (Diplôme d’Études en Langue Française) and DALF (Diplôme Approfondi de Langue Française) are official certificates awarded by the French Ministry of Education to certify the competency of candidates from outside of France in the French language. DELF and DALF are composed of 6 independent diplomas that correspond to the levels of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR).

DELF is for students with an elementary to intermediate level. DALF is for students with an upper-intermediate to advanced level.
DELF Junior is an official certificate awarded by the French Ministry of Education to certify the competency of candidates
under the age of 18 from outside of France in the French language.

DELF/DALF practical information

All nationalities can register for the exams, with the exception of French citizens.
All the examinations take place at the Institut français.
Your enrollment is valid once the enrollment fee is paid. Payment must be received at the latest on the last day of the enrollment period.

You will get the results of the DELF/DALF exams around one week after the last day of examination. They are sent both to you and to the Institut. It may take up to 3 months to receive the actual diploma.
People who have passed the DALF (C1 or C2) are exempt from taking language tests for entrance into French universities.

European reference level of language
 

DELF A1 ELEMENTARY LEVEL: 80-100 HOURS.

This exam demonstrates quite basic language skills and especially the ability to express yourself in everyday situations. The exam is divided into four disciplines: oral and written comprehension and oral and written expression skills. Total duration (can be spread over two days): 1 hour and 20 minutes and 20 minutes oral exam (10 min. preparation + 10 min. presentation).

DELF A2 ELEMENTARY LEVEL: 180-220 HOURS.

This level demonstrates basic language skills, the ability to behave in everyday situations and other social relationships. The exam is divided into four disciplines: oral and written comprehension and oral and written expression skills. Total duration (can be spread over two days): 1 hour and 40 minutes and 20 minutes oral exam (10 min. preparation + 10 min. presentation).

DELF B1 INTERMEDIATE LEVEL: 330-400 HOURS.

This exam demonstrates good language skills, follow up on more complex issues, arguments, point of views and the ability to tackle difficult and / or unforeseen everyday problems. The exam is divided into four disciplines: oral and written comprehension and oral and written expression skills. Total duration (can be spread over two days): 1 hour and 45 minutes and 25 minutes oral exam (15 min. preparation + 10 min. presentation).

DELF B2 INTERMEDIATE LEVEL: 530-650 HOURS.

This exam demonstrates language skills in practicing level, a broad vocabulary and ability to autocorrect. In addition the ability to listen, understand and participate in any interview situation. The exam is divided into four disciplines: oral and written comprehension and oral and written fluency. Total duration (can be divided into 2 days) 2 hours and 30 minutes and 50 minutes oral exam (30 min. preparation + 20 min. presentation).

DALF C1 ADVANCED LEVEL: 780-950 HOURS.

This exam demonstrates autonomy and spontaneity in any conversation. An exam for you with a very wide vocabulary and a thorough knowledge of French society and its culture. The exam is divided into four disciplines: oral and written comprehension and oral and written expression skills. Total duration (can be distributed over two days): 4 hours and 1 hour and 30 minutes oral exam (1 hour preparation + 30 min. presentation).

DALF C2 ADVANCED LEVEL: +950 HOURS.

This exam demonstrates an effortless and precise use of the French language, a very wide vocabulary and a thorough knowledge of French society and its culture. The exam is divided into four disciplines: oral and written comprehension and oral and written fluency. Total duration (can be spread over two days): 3 hours and 30 minutes and 1 hour and 30 minutes oral exam (1 hour preparation + 30 min. presentation).
