Shooting double bass talent combines Afro-Caribbean rhythms, classical influences and modern jazz
The award-winning French-Martinican double bassist and singer Sélène Saint-Aimé brings a merge of Afro-Caribbean rhythms, modern jazz and classical influences on stage in her shivering live performances. Experience this unique talent at ALICE in October when she performs with her trio.
With roots in Martinique and West Africa, the French double bassist, singer and poet developed her love for music as a teenager when she was volunteering at the Festival Django Reinhardt. She has been educated by internationally renowned bassists such as Lonnie Plaxico and Ron Carter, as well as saxophonist Steve Coleman. She published her debut album “Mare Undarum” in 2020 which was met with high critical acclaim and that ensured her the prestigious Victoire du Jazz Award in the 'Rising Star' category.
With her latest album “Potomitan” from 2022, Sélène Saint-Aimé strengthens her status as one of the most creative and original artists. She easily navigates between modern jazz, Afro-Caribbean rhythms and classical music, creating music that is both unique, smooth and tingling. Saint-Aimé is currently a composer in residence at Tropiques Atrium National Hall of Martinique and one of the 2022 Villa Albertine laureates in New Orleans, Louisiana. Furthermore, she has co-founded a non-profit organization called Afropolis with the Martinican percussionist Boris Reine-Adélaïde that aims to develop and promote the practice of traditional Martinican music.
Experience Sélène Saint-Aimé at ALICE with her trio, featuring the prominent musicians Rafael Aguila on tenor saxophone and Machito on percussion.
