Parlons de ...Gustave Caillebotte
On the occasion of the 130th anniversary of his death, the Musée d'Orsay pays tribute to Impressionist painter Gustave Caillebotte (1848-1894), Philippe Puisais will take you through the exhibition entitled “Caillebotte: painting men”.
His work has long been overlooked in favor of his impressionist friends. Born into a wealthy family, Caillebotte acquired over 70 works by Cézanne, Degas, Manet, Millet, Monet, Pissarro, Renoir and Sisley. His work shows new visions of virility. He introduced new figures into painting, such as the worker, the man on the balcony, the sportsman and the man in the bath.
At a time when bourgeois patriarchy was triumphant but the women's liberation movement had begun, his paintings bear witness to these changes in society. At the heart of Impressionism and Modernism, Caillebotte raised profound questions about the male condition.
