Solo exhibition: Apolonia Sokol

ARKEN Museum for Samtidskunst, Skovvej 100, 2635 Ishøj
13.10.2023 - 04.02.2024

ARKEN presents Apolonia Sokol and all her friends at her first major solo exhibition in Denmark.

In Apolonia Sokol's colourful paintings, intense gazes meet everywhere. Powerful and immediate, they stem from her life in the rebellious artistic underground of Paris. The paintings are a colourful and intimate gallery of the artist's friends, family and lovers. People of different ethnicities and sexual identities, portrayed with tenderness and placed at eye level. They look at you as you look at them - and you enter their lives, full of dreams and nightmares, love and conflict.

Apolonia Sokol, Franco-Polish, was born in France in 1988. In Paris, she grew up in a bohemian environment, in her parents' avant-garde theatre. Her childhood home became a springboard for her artistic life and career. She also lived in Denmark for part of her childhood and youth. Apolonia Sokol graduated in 2015 from one of Europe's most prestigious and traditional art academies, the École nationale supérieure des beaux-arts, and currently teaches as a professor at the École supérieure d'arts et médias de Caen/Cherbourg.
